Colorado's rich mining history - part 2

Frisco, CO
(Sightseeing)

June 18, 2017 - June 20, 2017

As we left our friends and Frisco, we headed to Leadville, Colorado to see two things which AAA recommended - Healy house and Dexter Cabin.  They are both located on the same property and a very nice man named George was our guide.  We saw Dexter "cabin" first and I put the word cabin in quotes because this was more a home than what I would call a cabin.  Unfortunately we didn't take enough pictures to really demonstrate what a nice place it was so you'll have to take my word for it.

From the outside - it looks like a cabin.  Mr. Dexter called it a hunting cabin and it was one of about
9 or 10 hunting cabins he owned.  He never let his family into any of them.  They were reserved for his personal use.

Beautiful stove and check out the wood floors.  This was located in the main room of
the "cabin" where Mr. Dexter had a desk, couch, chairs and poker table.  Don't know why we
don't have a picture?

His bed and bed warmer.  You can see the walls of the room are finished nicely.

A very old quilt from 1868.

Old tub in the bathroom.
Our tour guide George showing us this beautiful old container used to store sugar, flour, tea, etc.

You would never mistake the Healy house as a cabin.  It's a beautiful home that was built by a man (not named Healy) to impress the woman he loved and wished to marry.  They did eventually marry but lived in the house only a short time before he was transferred back east.  It went through several hands before ending up in Mr. Healy's hands.  His sister lived there the longest and eventually turned it into a boarding house.  It's been beautifully maintained through the years and is full of interesting artifacts.  If you ever get to Leadville - be sure to see this house.  It's a treasure.

This picture was "lifted" from their website because we forgot to take a picture of the exterior.
I was blown away by the wallpaper used through the house.  It was absolutely beautiful.  Here are three examples.

ceiling wallpaper

Fire screen in the living room

Beautiful light and don't miss the wall and ceiling wall paper.

Dining room

Beautiful side table.

Horse hair sofa.  Don't miss the wallpaper!

All the furniture was spectacular.
Dresser in a child's room.  Again - check out the wall paper!
Gorgeous bed.

Another fabulous bed and dynamite wallpaper.
No ordinary sewing machine.  This is a beauty.
Wash basin and chamber pot.

Beautiful dresser.

Yet another beautiful dresser and of course extraordinary wallpaper.
This little gem played music recorded on cylinders.
Don't miss the wallpaper in the background.

Kitchen stove

Pie chest (and unique wallpaper)

The old ice chest, butter churn and ice cream maker.
Last but not least - the gardens.

After we finished our tour we drove on to pick up or mail in Poncha Springs.  Managed to get there just 15 minutes before closing on a Friday night!  That was close.  Drove on to Salida where we found a nice campground right along the Arkansas river.

  1. Too much wall paper for my decorating taste! But loved seeing it all.
